FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

I'm new to all this and have a lot of questions -- can I schedule an in-person consultation?

Absolutely. We would love to sit down with you and your family and discuss what we can do to help. To get started, send us an email to help@openbookacademics.com and tell us what we can do for you.

Which test prep materials do I need and how do I get them?

A pencil, notebook, and our current (College Board / Real ACT) test prep book(s). We do have a limited number of SAT and ACT test-prep books available for purchase at a discounted rate on a first-come, first-served basis. All books can be purchased online (Amazon) or in local stores (Target, Walmart, Barnes & Noble).

Do you have references from students and parents who have worked with you in the past?

Yes, on request, we are happy to provide both student and parent recommendations and references. We can even put you in touch with current and or former clients who know us.

How much SAT & ACT prep do you recommend?

The simple answer: it depends on the student. But for most, the more the better. Two to four hours a week is optimum. Since both the SAT and ACT are skill-based exams, success comes with consistent study, routine practice, repetition. Our monthly OpenBook Model Learning Subscription was created in order to provide this opportunity at an affordable rate.

What are the benefits of one-on-one instruction?

Almost all students perform better academically in a one-on-one scenario but it depends on the student. Extroverts, and those with higher levels of ability and focus, tend to do better in a group setting than those students who are further behind in the material or who are easily distracted. Our goal is to find the best fit for each of our students -- and what is right for you.

Are my friends and I able to form our own private study or test prep group?

Absolutely -- and we encourage it. We are accommodating of private groups up to ten students, either for high school study, projects, or SAT/ACT test prep.

Do you offer last-minute test prep review sessions?

We do! While it isn't preferable, we know that sometimes it is the only option left. We do individual reviews as well as private group reviews with your friends and or siblings. Whether the week of or the day before -- call us to cram.

How long are individual tutoring sessions?

Typically, one-on-one classes are an hour long while others meet for an hour and a half or two hours. Consistency is the key. It all depends on the amount of prep needed, the number of times a week the student and tutor meet, and the student's schedule. We know you need flexibility, so we're flexible too!

Do you really offer a free hour of instruction to see if OpenBook is right for me?

Yes, for all non-referral students, we are happy to offer a free, one-hour instructional session (a $150 value) for SAT, PSAT, or ACT test prep. No catch, no commitment, no cash. Offer not valid for review sessions. Please click the link below to reserve your spot now. We're looking forward to working with you.

What are your rates?

Our rates vary based on the service required and the amount of hours committed. Please contact us at help@openbookacademics.com for current prices.

Are your rates negotiable?

They are not.

Do you offer discounts?

Yes, via our OpenBook Model SAT/ACT Learning Subscription. Additionally, we run periodic, seasonal discounts, and special offers for returning and current students.

Are refunds available if I don't get the score I wanted?

Unfortunately, no, we don't offer refunds because we feel it would be unfair to our other students who have received the same quality instruction.

May I pay with a credit card?

Yes.

Do you offer make-up sessions?

Yes, we offer same-week makeups if an unexpected conflict arises. If however, a student does not show up for his or her scheduled appointment, and has not notified us at least 12 hours in advance, the full cost of the session will be due before the next session can be scheduled. *Not applicable to students in our OpenBook Model Learning Subscription.

Where is OpenBook Academics located?

We are located on the top floor of the historic Waverly Park Mansion in Leesburg, Virginia. Our address is 604 South King Street, Suite 300, Leesburg, VA 20175.

I live a little too far from Leesburg -- can we still work together?
